Babette’s Feast:
Multilingual and multicultural theatre
The exchange of knowledge and practices in inclusive theatre concluded with the development of a theatrical co-production inspired by the iconic short story “Babette’s Feast” by Danish author Karen Blixen.
The partners and specialists in multicultural and multilingual theatre from Denmark, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden share their experience, network, develop the co-production, promote social inclusion through performing arts, and offer their expertise in creating opportunities for artists with foreign backgrounds by (Immart), multilingual theatre productions (Reykjavík Ensemble International Theatre), transcultural theatre education (Black Nordic Theatre) and language acquisition through drama (Teater Aros).
The development of a multilingual and multicultural play “Djöfulsins snillingur” will put into practice tools and practices gathered in the project. The inspiration for the play is the iconic character — Babette, a talented refugee, a personification of immigrant voices, diversity narratives, and cultural displacement concerns.
The project is supported by Reykjavíkurborg, Performing Arts Fund, Nordic Culture Point, and Nordic Culture Fund.

Nordic Black Theatre (NORWAY)
A self-run theatre foundation, established in 1992, produces its own productions, participates in collaborative projects with other artists, and develops young multicultural actors through the theatre school Nordic Black Xpress (NBX).
Teater Aros (SWEDEN)
A non-profit organization that works with changing and improving society through theatre. Since its foundation in 2009, Teater Aros has taught Swedish through theatre to refugees and immigrants of various ages, both in school and in volunteer programs.
Immart (DENMARK)
A non-profit association, art organization and network working on the crossing of international migration and arts since 2016. Immart supports and bring together international artists.
Reykjavík Ensemble (ICELAND)
International theatre company funded in 2019 as a platform for multinational theatre artists, whose work is celebrated regardless of origin, gender, or mother tongue. The company develops and presents original theatre productions.
